The advent of ChatGPT in late 2022 has sparked a surge of interest in generative AI and its associated technologies, as evidenced by the compelling agenda of IRX & eDX 2023 at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham this May.
How will generative artificial intelligence revolutionize the retail landscape? How can retailers effectively harness this cutting-edge technology, which has dominated media discussions since the release of ChatGPT in November? Furthermore, how can retailers leverage other forms of AI and automation to elevate both employee and customer experiences?
These pressing questions will be addressed at the highly anticipated IRX (InternetRetailing Expo) and eDX (eDelivery Expo), as demonstrated by the comprehensive event agenda. Registration is still open for the UK’s leading digital retail show, taking place on May 24th and 25th at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, and admission is free of charge.
One captivating panel session that should not be missed is titled “Envisioning the Optimal Online Experience by 2025: What Lies Ahead?” Esteemed industry experts, including Aurelie Seth, Senior Product Manager at The Whisky Exchange, and Victoria Ntale, Senior Customer Care Manager at Lyst, will share their invaluable insights and expertise.
Moreover, the event features a fireside chat between Dr Amna Khan, Senior Lecturer in Consumer Behaviour and Retailing at Manchester Metropolitan University Business School, and Michelle Gledhill, Programme Leader of MSC Creative Advertising Strategy at Manchester University. They will delve into the realm of “Enhancing Consumer Experience through Mobile Apps: Unlocking Gen Z’s Enthusiasm.”
In addition, attendees can benefit from a session led by Lois Richards, Logistics and Operations Lead at Astrid & Miyu, a contemporary London-based jewellery brand. Richards will explore the realm of “Automating Fulfilment to Drive Efficiency and Cost Savings.”
Last but not least, Maria White, Search Lead at Kurt Geiger, will shed light on the workings of ChatGPT in the retail sector.
By actively engaging with these agenda items, participants at IRX and eDX will gain valuable insights into the evolving landscape of retail and how to accelerate their AI initiatives to enhance both employee productivity and customer satisfaction.
Blending the Digital and Physical Realms
In line with the theme of this article, IRX sought insights from ChatGPT, an advanced language model trained on a vast corpus of 300 billion words by OpenAI. The question posed was straightforward yet profound: How can retailers effectively harness the power of generative AI? In response, the program generated a comprehensive list of ten potential applications of generative AI that can revolutionize business operations, enhance customer experiences, and optimize marketing strategies.
One notable example is personalized product recommendations. Generative AI can analyze customer data, purchase history, and preferences to deliver tailored recommendations, thereby boosting sales and customer satisfaction.
Retailers can draw inspiration from industry giants such as Amazon and Netflix, whose “what to watch next” suggestions offer a glimpse into the possibilities of digital retail. Notably, retailers who have embraced such technologies in physical settings have experienced notable success, as attested by Adam Warne, Chief Information Officer at River Island.
River Island, a fashion brand at the forefront of innovation, recently introduced “smart fitting rooms.” Warne, who will be speaking at IRX in a session titled “Championing Business Agility in a Dynamic Economic Landscape,” explained the concept: “All garments in our fitting rooms are equipped with radio-frequency identification tags. By simply pressing a button on the fitting-room screen, customers can request different sizes to be brought to them by staff. The system also suggests other products that complement the items being tried on, even if they are only available online,” he added. “This innovation has not only led to an increase in order value but has also seamlessly integrated the digital and physical realms.”
In response to how generative AI can benefit retailers and customers, ChatGPT highlighted its potential in store design and layout. By analyzing customer behaviors and preferences, generative AI can optimize product placement to ensure maximum performance. This application has the power to enhance the shopping experience by making it more enjoyable and efficient.
Furthermore, the generated response emphasized the advantages of generative AI in supply chain optimization, providing end-to-end visibility of products and materials. It can also assist in content generation, market analysis, trend forecasting, and dynamic pricing based on factors such as customer preferences, competitor pricing, and market conditions.
Unsurprisingly, the response also highlighted the use of chatbots and customer service as a significant application of generative AI. While many online retailers have already implemented AI-powered chatbots to handle customer inquiries and support during the buying journey, there is still room for improvement in this area.
In conclusion, ChatGPT affirmed that by integrating generative AI into their operations, retailers can enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and deliver superior customer experiences.
However, it is crucial to consider the cautionary words expressed in an open letter signed by Elon Musk and numerous other high-profile individuals, including engineers from Amazon, DeepMind, Google, Meta, and Microsoft. The letter called for responsible development and deployment of powerful AI systems, emphasizing the need for understanding, predictability, and reliable control to ensure positive effects and manageable risks.
Retail leaders would be wise to heed this advice and maintain human oversight when utilizing generative AI to avoid potential pitfalls. Neglecting to do so may result in loss of customer loyalty and trust. Undoubtedly, the responsible and ethical use of AI will remain a prominent topic of discussion at IRX and eDX, both on and off the stage.
