This is without the doubt the case in London. London has such a vibrant mix of bars, from classy champagne bars to quirky themed cocktail establishments. Although the underdogs rarely score highly in Strictly Come Dancing odds, or become the bookie’s favourite, they certainly find a special place in our hearts! Who doesn’t love watching someone make an idiot out of themselves on live television, whilst kicking back from the comfort of your own home? Sometimes the worst dancers are the best dancers – and the following contestants certainly prove that to be true! Read on as we talk you through some of the most jaw-dropping wannabe dancers that the Strictly ballroom has ever seen.

John Sergeant

John Sergeant is best known for his work as a political commentator, as well as a much-loved television broadcaster, but we know him best as the man who changed the Paso Doble forever. Sergeant appeared on the show back in 2008, and was partnered up with the ever-glamorous professional Kristina Rihanoff. He quickly made a name for himself as the worst contestant that had ever been seen on the show, despite the fact he was trying so hard to pick up the steps.

His worst moment was undoubtedly in week six, when he and Rihanoff performed their own rendition of the Paso Doble. Typically, a fast-paced Spanish dance, its namesake roughly translating to “double-step”, and Sergeant definitely took that translation very literally. The seasoned journalist began to stomp around the stage, as the music began, before taking his partner by the ankle, and dragging her across the floor, in what has now been dubbed as the “least graceful move…[anyone] has ever seen”. Ah, we still love you John!

Ann Widdecombe

Now, you didn’t think that we’d compile a list like this without mentioned the iconic performances that came from British politician, Ann Widdecombe, did you? Perhaps one of the best known “so-bad-it’s-good” contests of all time, Widdecombe made history when she took to the dance floor in 2010. Partnered with Anton Du Beke, someone who is no stranger to being paired up with a somewhat challenging celebrity, the daring duo put forward many comedic performances, that kept avid watchers in stitches.

One of the most memorable performances from Widdecombe and Du Beke came in the form of their fantastically awful Rumba in week nine, which saw the pair bopping around to the Titanic theme tune – My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion. This routine involved the politician being hoisted up by wires and a pully system, flying her way past a tongue-in-cheek ice-berg prop, whilst Du Beke waited below, before swinging his partner around by one of her ankles and her wrist. If that’s not an image that’ll stay with you forever – the we don’t know what is!

Ed Balls

Fast forward to 2016, and the Strictly Come Dancing stage was graced by the unrhythmic stylings of the former Labour MP Ed Balls. From the very beginning, Balls’ talents weren’t exactly looking promising, but his partner, Katya Jones, did her best with what she had. Balls and Jones were one of the series’ most popular couples, hence why they managed to hang on in the competition until week 10 – landing them 6th place!

Ed Balls left us speechless when he took to the stage in week eight, busting out his best Salsa moves to none other than Psy’s Gangnam Style. An internet sensation back in 2012, you wouldn’t necessarily pair this song with a Salsa dance, but these two definitely proved that idea wrong! Fans were left with their jaws on the floor after Katya Jones was seen to lift her partner, as well as letting him chuck her around like a rag doll! To say that it was entertaining, is an understatement!

The trials and tribulations of Nicola Adams’ time under the glitter ball

If you were planning on putting your money on former professional boxer Nicola Adams using the Strictly Come Dancing betting pages, then you may want to rethink your decisions, as the star and her dance partner, Katya Jones, have been removed from this year’s show, due to a positive coronavirus test from the latter. BBC Bosses confirmed that Jones has tested positive for the virus, despite presenting with no symptoms. The pair have since been instructed to go into immediate isolation, separately, missing the rest of the series as a result.

Although Nicola Adams will remain obsolete in the betting odds, there still seems to be a chance that she’ll get to take to the Strictly floor once again. Reportedly, the iconic pairing will be brought back for the show’s final, in an attempt to sooth the burn left by their early departure.

But, why are people so upset about Adams and Jones’ dancing partnership being cut off so early? Well, for many, seeing two females dancing together on a prime-time television show is the kind of inspiring, social progression that our society has so greatly needed. With that in mind, let’s delve a little deeper into the timeline of reactions this controversial move has brought with it, from the British public.

In an article published on the 27th of September 2020, almost a month before the show was even due to air, it was noted that complaints had already started to pour in, after the news that a same-sex pairing was due to hit license-payers’ screens.

Strictly Come Dancing have teased their openness to featuring a same-sex dance duo in 2019’s competition, when they showcased two of their male professionals dancing together as Emile Sande performed, as that week’s musical guest. Strictly fans seemed to react positively to the performance, with one of the judges, Shirley Ballas, going as far as saying that the dance was “the most magnificent thing I have [ever] witnessed”.

Following this performance, the BBC stated that they were “proud to have featured same sex dancing” as well as voicing that they were “completely open to the prospect of including same sex pairings” in future shows.

Well, when Nicola Adams got the call to say that she’d been offered a place in the Strictly Come Dancing ballroom, she chose to test that statement. Prior to the series’ launch, the TV giants went on to announce:

“Nicola Adams requested an all-female pairing, which we are happy to facilitate. The show is first and foremost about dance, the sex of each partner within a coupling should have no bearing on their routine”

Adams is no stranger to breaking records, as well as making history in a whole host of ways. Many years ago, at the 2012 Olympic Games, Nicola Adams become the first openly LGBT+ person to win a gold medal in boxing. And, with her same-sex performances on Strictly, she has set yet another record for the gay community.

Speaking on her latest record, she said:

“I think it’s really important – it’s a big step for the show. It’s nice to see that we’re able to move on”.

Although there are many who don’t agree with having two females dancing together on our television screens, you cannot deny that having just that, is a great sign of progression, and a step towards a more equal and fair society.

How to keep the spark alive in your relationship

Love, romance, conversations, sex are four powerful aspects in most relationships. These aspects define our lives, especially for those in a relationship. One honest truth about relationships is that they mimic an ignited fire camp on a snowy night. Spark and zealous burning of the wood initially are often down to the addition of fuel. But you don’t keep adding fuel to sustain the campfire. Rather, you regularly add wood.

The same principle applies to relationships. The early spark that occurs due to attraction or other reasons cools off after a while. To continue or sustain that spark and keep the relationship alive, you must keep adding “firewood,” so to speak. This article offers some takeaways and will hopefully help you keep your relationship alive and burning.

1.  Communicate Your Feelings/Needs

Pre-relationship phase, you might be a solo person in terms of thoughts, decisions, and lifestyle choices. Sorry, Tom Cruise!!! A relationship is another ball game entirely. In order to ensure a long-lasting and interesting relationship, communication is vital. Your mate can’t read your mind, so kindly express your thoughts. Tell each other how much you love and value him/her. Remember, don’t just say it; mean it also.

Communication is quite elaborate, even to the extent of showing and acknowledging your partner’s effort, even on the simplest of things. “Well done” is such a comforting word, coupled with a glass of water. Funny how you both might be doing chores together, but that shouldn’t limit you. Take the initiative and pour a drink for you and your partner.

Finally, on communication, grow to understand your partner and avoid the incentive to solve every problem with gifts, for example. Create time to listen. Listen, let your partner do the talking. From estate agents in Buckingham to potential buyers in Leeds, this news of stamp duty holiday came as great news. Now, the question at hand is, did stamp duty holiday do the job that it was supposed to? Did stamp duty holiday ensure that homes start selling in full tilt until the March 20201 deadline?

What is the stamp duty holiday?

First, let’s talk a little about what the stamp duty holiday is. The government has put a temporary ban on stamp duty on properties for sale in England and Northern Ireland. Properties costing up to £500,000 will not have any stamp duty levied on them, Properties that are between £500,001 to £925,000 will have just 5 percent stamp duty while properties between £925,001 to £1.5m will have 10 percent stamp duty. However, properties that cost £1.5m and more will continue to have 12 percent as the stamp duty. The aim of the stamp duty holiday was essential to boost buyer confidence, to encourage people to move homes, to revive the real estate market, and boost the economy as a whole. This initiative also opens new avenues for those interested in wholesale real estate, offering a more favourable climate for investment and transactions.

Who was motivated to buy property because of the stamp duty holiday?

First time buyers saw stamp duty holiday as a big incentive to start looking at properties. Even current homeowners showed interest in viewing new properties once the stamp duty holiday was announced. With so many people sitting at home during the lockdown, thoughts of home improvement and moving into bigger homes became very common. Most working people wished to have a home office, which meant moving into bigger homes to make the wish come true, for some people. Others wanted to move into bigger homes with patios and gardens so that they could enjoy being at home. The lockdown made homeowners feel that they wanted to improve their homes and their lifestyles. This indeed motivated people to use the opportunity at hand and start looking at properties that were an upgrade from their current homes, without having to pay too much money in stamp duty.

According to research, South East England and London would benefit the most from stamp duty holiday because the property prices in these areas are high on average. Stamp duty holiday in these areas would allow buyers to save more, which would give buyers a huge incentive to invest. In fact, in London itself, there was a 27 percent increase in the demand for properties just within weeks of the announcement of the stamp duty holiday.  The prices of property in the UK have seen a slight increase because there is a rise in demand while the supply is relatively low.

Since the UK government announced this incentive, more and more first time buyers are coming forward to purchase the property. Just in one week, between 3rd August and 8th August 2020, the number of homes for sale across the country was around 146 percent above the five-year average of properties for sale that were valued at less than £1.5 million. This is the main real estate section, where the impact of the stamp duty holiday was felt strongly.

As per the data from  Knight Frank, the number of prospective buyers that registered nearly doubled within the first month of the stamp duty holiday incentive. According to them, the number of viewings for properties that were valued under £1.5 million rose by a whopping 46 percent from July to August while there was also a 13 percent increase in viewings for properties that were valued above £1.5 million.

Has stamp duty holiday worked?

In short, the stamp duty holiday has most definitely worked. While this is only a temporary measure by the government to boost the economy, the government might want to consider making this a more permanent feature. With the removal of stamp duty for properties valued under £500,000, as well as the significant reduction in stamp duty for properties valued between £500,000 and £1.5 million, there has been a drastic increase in the number of viewings as well as the number of buyers. In conclusion, the stamp duty holiday ensured that houses started selling in full tilt before the March 2021 deadline.
