Mollie Prepares for AI-Driven Payments Ahead of OpenAI’s European Launch

Mollie has positioned itself at the forefront of AI-enabled commerce by becoming one of the first European payment providers to create a fully functional payment integration with ChatGPT. During a hackathon in Lisbon, the company’s product and engineering teams showcased a complete purchase journey handled entirely by an AI assistant — from product discovery to checkout via Apple Pay. The achievement is underpinned by Mollie’s successful development of a delegated payments API, enabling its systems to work with OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). Although ACP has not yet launched in Europe, Mollie is already prepared to support businesses the moment it becomes available.

Prepared for new sales channels

“Our customers shouldn’t need to be experts in competing protocols,” says Bernardo Caldas, Director of Data & AI at Mollie. “We handle this for them. Our infrastructure is ready, which means they can focus on their business, knowing we’ll be prepared to help them sell through AI from day one.” With more than 250,000 customers ranging from start-ups to major enterprises, Mollie is positioning itself for what could be the next major evolution in e-commerce. The company is also collaborating with other platforms on the competing Agent Payments Protocol.

One integration for multiple protocols

Mollie’s long-term strategy is to offer businesses access to multiple AI commerce protocols through a single integration. This approach removes the need for companies to choose between competing systems; instead, they can continue using their existing Mollie setup. “This isn’t about a product launch,” emphasises Caldas. “This is a strategic move that shows we’re actively building for the future. When this new sales channel opens, we’re ready.”
